Designing risk-aware onboarding for decentralised yield strategies. PsyFi enables users to deposit digital assets into automated options vaults in order to generate yield. However, committing capital into strategies with fixed lock-in periods introduced hesitation at the point of onboarding particularly when users were required to connect a wallet and deposit funds without clearly understanding exposure.
Problem
Vault setup previously required users to:
- select an asset
- review strategy documentation
- determine risk tolerance
- commit funds
before fully understanding potential outcomes.
This led to onboarding drop-off at the wallet connection and deposit stage, where users were expected to make financially meaningful decisions with limited in-product context.

Product Decision 01
Risk-led vault selection
(Vault Search View Image)
Vaults were reorganised around exposure profiles (low / medium / high risk) rather than asset types alone.
This allowed users to:
- determine acceptable downside first
- compare APY within a known risk band
- avoid committing capital based on yield alone
Supporting vault selection as a risk decision rather than a return comparison.

Product Decision 02
Confidence Before Commitment
(Vault Interaction Module)
Lock-in period, projected gains and downside protection were surfaced directly within the deposit interaction.
Previously, users committed funds without seeing:
- capital lock duration
- performance projection
- downside exposure
Vault setup now included:
- lock duration selection
- projected performance
- payoff visualisation
prior to confirming a deposit.
This shifted vault creation from a technical setup into a financially informed commitment.

Interaction Loop
Once a vault position was created, users could:
- monitor performance
- adjust lock periods
- withdraw or re-deposit funds
supporting repeat engagement over one-time deposits.

Reflection
Designing for decentralised finance introduces a unique responsibility where UX decisions directly impact how confidently users commit capital.
By structuring the experience around progressive disclosure and risk-aware interaction, PsyFi made automated yield strategies more accessible without oversimplifying financial mechanics.

Outcomes
Following implementation, the updated onboarding and vault interaction flow contributed to:
- reduced onboarding drop-off during wallet connection
- increased first-time deposits into low-risk vaults
- improved vault selection completion time
